Constructed from Wandoo, Jarrah and Karri, the Garratt Rd Bridge over the Swan River opened on the 1st of January 1935 on Perth Cup Day at the adjacent Ascot Racecourse. By the 1960's it became apparent that increased traffic required an upgrade with an additional bridge upstream and this was completed in 1972 with an upgrade to Grandstand Rd. This design remains in place to this day. In 2010, both the downstream and upstream bridges were listed in the Register of Historic Places ensuring their preservation.

This image taken at water level of the underside of the upstream bridge, captures the engineering project and the magnificent wood construction of the longest timber bridge still in existence in Western Australia. It may have been the longest ever built in the state and the downstream bridge was probably the last wooden bridge to be built in Perth.

You can own this image as a framed print on A2 (420mm x 594mm) Ilford Crystal Gloss under reflection controlled Artglass 70 for $750 signed and numbered by Damien in a strictly limited publication of just ten. (#1 & #2 sold)
